area and perimeter

Area and Perimeter

Learn to measure and calculate the perimeter of composite shapes, compare areas of rectangles and squares using cm² and m², and estimate the area of irregular shapes.

Target Age:

Lesson Overview

By the end of this unit, students will:

  1. measure and calculate the perimeter of composite rectilinear shapes in centimetres and metres;
  2. calculate and compare the area of rectangles and squares, including using standard units, square centimetres (cm²) and square metres (m²);
  3. and estimate the area of irregular shapes.

Curriculum Alignment: Year 6 Measurements:

  • recognise that shapes with the same areas can have different perimeters and vice versa
  • recognise when it is possible to use formulae for the area and volume of shapes.
