Description

By the end of this unit, students will:

  1. understand that ratio shows the relationship between two values and can describe how one relates to the other;
  2. understand the colon notation as the ratio symbol;
  3. find equivalent ratios by dividing or multiplying by the same number.

Key Stage 3: Ratio, proportion and rates of change

  • use ratio notation, including reduction to simplest form
  • divide a given quantity into 2 parts in a given part:part or part:whole ratio; express the division of a quantity into 2 parts as a ratio
  • understand that a multiplicative relationship between 2 quantities can be expressed as a ratio or a fraction
  • relate the language of ratios and the associated calculations to the arithmetic of fractions and to linear functions
