states of matter

Solids, Liquids, Gases

Discover the fascinating world of solids, liquids, and gases! Learn how to classify materials, explore changes of state like melting and evaporation, and see how heating or cooling transforms substances. Perfect for curious minds ready to investigate matter in action!

Target Age:

Lesson Overview

By the end of this unit, students will be able to:

  • Describe the properties of solids, liquids, and gases, such as shape, volume, and flow.
  • Classify different materials into their respective states of matter based on their properties.
  • Investigate changes of state, such as melting, freezing, evaporation, and condensation.
  • Explain how heating and cooling can affect the state of a substance.

Curriculum Alignment: Year 4 Science: State of matter

  • compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases
  • observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled, and measure or research the temperature at which this happens in degrees Celsius (°C)
  • identify the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle and associate the rate of evaporation with temperature
