Introduction to Surd

simplifying surds
Description

By the end of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. understand the concept of surds and their significance in mathematics;
  2. simplify and perform operations with surds, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division;
  3. apply surds in algebraic manipulations and geometric calculations.

Key Stage 4: Number

Calculate exactly with fractions, {surds} and multiples of π {simplify surd expressions involving squares [for example √12 = √(4 × 3) = √4 × √3 = 2√3] and rationalise denominators}
