Description
By the end of this unit, children will be able to:
- Understand the concept of arrays as a way to organize objects or numbers into rows and columns.
- Create and represent arrays for given numbers using objects and drawings.
- Apply arrays to solve multiplication and division problems.
- Recognize the relationship between the number of rows and columns in an array and the multiplication or division operation.
- Develop mental math skills by visualizing arrays to solve problems.
National Curriculum Objectives
Year 2 Number: Multiplication and division
- Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers.
- Calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division within the multiplication tables and write them using the multiplication (×), division (÷) and equals (=) signs.
- Show that multiplication of 2 numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and division of 1 number by another cannot.
- Solve problems involving multiplication and division, using materials, arrays, repeated addition, mental methods, and multiplication and division facts, including problems in contexts.
