Volumes of Cubes and Cuboids

Make the link between counting cubes and the formula: (l x w x h) to calculate the volume of a cuboid.

Target Age:

Lesson Overview

By the end of this unit, learners will:

  • make the link between counting cubes and the formula: (l x w x h) to calculate the volume of a cuboid;
  • understand that the formula is the same as calculating the are of the base and multiplying this by the height.

Curriculum Alignment: Year 6 Measurements:

  • Calculate, estimate and compare volume of cubes and cuboids using standard units, including cubic centimetres (cm³) and cubic metres (m³), and extending to other units [for example, mm³ and km³].
