Place Value

In this lesson, learners will read and write numbers to at least 100 in numerals and in words; recognize the place value of each digit in a three-digit number (hundreds, tens, ones); and use place value and number facts to solve problems.

Lesson Overview

By the end of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. identify the value of digits in two-digit and three-digit numbers;
  2. understand the concept of tens and ones places in two-digit numbers, and hundreds, tens, and ones places in three-digit numbers;
  3. represent numbers using base-10 blocks, place value charts, and expanded form;
  4. compare and order numbers based on their place values;
  5. apply place value concepts to solve addition and subtraction problems.

 

Curriculum Alignment: Year 3 Number: Number and Place Value.

  • Recognise the place value of each digit in a 3-digit number (100s, 10s, 1s).
  • Identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations.
  • Read and write numbers up to 1,000 in numerals and in words.
  • Solve number problems and practical problems involving these ideas.
