Multiply by 10, 100 and 1,000

In this lesson, learners will revisit multiplying whole numbers by 10 and 100, and move on to multiplying whole numbers by 1,000. They will come to understand that the effect of multiplying by 10 twice is the same as multiplying by 100 and that multiplying by 10 three times is the same as multiplying by 1,000.

Description

By the end of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Understand the concept of multiplying numbers by 10, 100, and 1,000 and the resulting shift of digits to the left.
  2. Perform multiplications by shifting digits to the left by one, two, or three places when multiplying by powers of 10.
  3. Recognize the relationship between these multiplications and place value.
  4. Apply the concept of multiplying by powers of 10 to solve real-life and mathematical problems.
