Multiplications Grid Method

By the end of this unit, students will be able to:

1. understand and apply the multiplication grid method to solve multiplication problems involving two-digit numbers by one-digit numbers;
2. break down a multiplication problem into partial products using a grid format;
3. perform multi-digit multiplication using the multiplication grid method and combine partial products to find the final answer;
4. apply the multiplication grid method to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

Curriculum Alignment: Year 3 Number: Multiplication and Division

• Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables.
• Write and calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division using the multiplication tables that they know, including for two-digit numbers times one-digit numbers, using mental and progressing to formal written methods.
• Solve problems, including missing number problems, involving multiplication and division, including positive integer scaling problems and correspondence problems in which n objects are connected to m objects.
