This Scale Drawings lesson teaches students to apply their ratio skills to the real-world context of scale plans and drawings. Across 38 slides, students work through measurement conversions — such as working out how many millimetres are in a kilometre — before moving on to interpreting scale plans and choosing a suitable scale for their own drawing.
A starter activity checks students’ confidence with unit conversion before the main lesson builds up to finding exact real-world values from a given scale factor, a skill that depends on secure ratio understanding from earlier in Key Stage 3.
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to apply ratio skills to scale plans and drawings, find exact values from a given scale factor, and interpret scale plans to decide on a suitable scale for a drawing of their own.
Scale drawings connect maths directly to real life — maps, model-making and architectural plans all rely on exactly this skill — which helps students see ratio as a genuinely useful tool rather than an abstract classroom exercise.
The lesson is interactive and self-marking throughout, with instant feedback on every question, so it works well for whole-class teaching, independent practice or homework.
