Why does a stationary object stay still? This 21-slide interactive lesson teaches balanced and unbalanced forces, with a printable worksheet included.
Pupils learn to define balanced and unbalanced forces, understand how forces affect an object’s motion, and practise identifying forces in everyday situations. A force is a push or a pull, measured in Newtons, and shown by an arrow. Balanced forces are equal in size but opposite in direction, so a stationary object stays still, while unbalanced forces cause an object to start moving, stop or change direction. The lesson also introduces gravity, which pulls objects down, and friction, which opposes motion between two surfaces.
A dependable addition to a Year 3 science topic, giving pupils a clear, everyday introduction to forces before more formal physics later on. Understanding balanced and unbalanced forces is the foundation for all later work on motion.
