In Year 4, fractions and decimals come together. Pupils meet whole families of equivalent fractions, start working in hundredths, and learn that 1/2, 1/4 and 3/4 can also be written as 0.5, 0.25 and 0.75.
By the end of Year 4, the National Curriculum expects pupils to:
equivalent fraction, numerator, denominator, hundredth, tenth, decimal, decimal point, decimal place, simplify, quantity
Year 4 builds on Year 3’s tenths and simple equivalent fractions. In Year 5, pupils compare and order fractions with different denominators, work with mixed numbers and improper fractions, and begin percentages.
What are equivalent fractions?
Fractions that are worth the same amount even though they look different, such as 1/2, 2/4 and 5/10. Multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number gives an equivalent fraction.
How do you find 3/4 of a number?
Divide the number by the denominator (4) to find one quarter, then multiply by the numerator (3). For example, 3/4 of 20: 20 ÷ 4 = 5, and 5 × 3 = 15.
Why are decimals taught alongside fractions?
They are two ways of writing the same values. Seeing that 0.25 and 1/4 are the same number helps pupils with money, measurement and later with percentages.
