Pupils learn to recognise and use square numbers from 1² to 12², use counters and squares to build them, and use the index notation ². They learn that a square number is what you get when you multiply a number by itself, so 5 × 5 = 25 makes 25 a square number, and that the small 2 tells you how many times to multiply the number by itself. Pupils select the first 10 square numbers from a list, work out two-digit square numbers between 1 and 100, and use real-life contexts, such as 12 rows of 12 daffodils, to apply their learning.
