Area and perimeter of squares and rectangles

By the end of this unit, students will:

  1. Understand the definitions of area and perimeter and their importance in geometry.
  2. Calculate the area and perimeter of squares and rectangles using appropriate formulas.
  3. Apply their knowledge to solve real-world problems involving squares and rectangles.

Curriculum Alignment: Key Stage 3: Geometry and Measures

  • Derive and apply formulae to calculate and solve problems involving: the perimeter and area of triangles, parallelograms, trapezia, the volume of cuboids (including cubes), and other prisms (including cylinders)
  • Calculate and solve problems involving: perimeters of 2-D shapes (including circles), areas of circles, and composite shapes
