functions of the heart

By the end of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. explore the structure of the heart (four chambers, valves) and its location in the body;
  2. describe the main function of the heart as a muscular pump that circulates blood throughout the body;
  3. understand that the heart is a muscle;
  4. understand that when the heart contracts, it pumps blood around the circulatory system, through the blood vessels.
Year 6 Science: Animals including humans
  • associate the brightness of a lamp or the volume of a buzzer with the number and voltage of cells used in the circuit
  • compare and give reasons for variations in how components function, including the brightness of bulbs, the loudness of buzzers and the on/off position of switches
  • use recognised symbols when representing a simple circuit in a diagram.
