Is it ‘comfortably’ or ‘comfortibly’? This 11-slide interactive lesson teaches words ending in -ably and -ibly using a simple root-word rule.
Pupils learn that -ably and -ibly are adverb suffixes formed from -able and -ible adjectives, apply the rule that a complete root word takes -ably while an incomplete root takes -ibly, and spell common words correctly. They see that adore becomes adorably and comfort becomes comfortably because both are complete words, while terr- is not a word on its own, so it takes -ibly, as in terribly. Pupils also learn key exceptions to the rule, such as sensibly, responsibly and flexibly.
A dependable addition to a KS2 spelling topic, giving pupils a genuine test they can apply to any -able or -ible word they meet. Understanding the logic behind a spelling rule makes it far easier to remember than a list alone.
