Solutions and Evaporating

By the end of this unit, students will be able to:

  • understand what a solution is and identify the components of a solution (solute and solvent);
  • differentiate between substances that dissolve in a liquid (soluble) and those that do not (insoluble);
  • understand what evaporation is and recognize it as a process where a liquid changes into a gas;
  • understand why filtration cannot separate dissolved substances and why sieving cannot be used for dissolved solids.

Curriculum Alignment: Year 5 Science: Properties and changes of materials

  • know that some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution, and describe how to recover a substance from a solution
  • use knowledge of solids, liquids and gases to decide how mixtures might be separated, including through filtering, sieving and evaporating.
