By the end of this unit, students will be able to:
- understand what a solution is and identify the components of a solution (solute and solvent);
- differentiate between substances that dissolve in a liquid (soluble) and those that do not (insoluble);
- understand what evaporation is and recognize it as a process where a liquid changes into a gas;
- understand why filtration cannot separate dissolved substances and why sieving cannot be used for dissolved solids.
Curriculum Alignment: Year 5 Science: Properties and changes of materials
- know that some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution, and describe how to recover a substance from a solution
- use knowledge of solids, liquids and gases to decide how mixtures might be separated, including through filtering, sieving and evaporating.
